The Rights of the Dead

The Rights of the Dead - Malaysia

In 2009, the body of Teoh Beng Hock (TBH), political aide of a Selangor Executive Councilor, was found outside of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building, where he had been held overnight for interrogation. As an ex-colleague of the deceased, Tricia Yeoh takes a close look at the circumstances that led to TBH’s death and the investigation that followed. Using archival footage, photographs, and interviews the filmmaker goes on a journey to find out about the status quo of Malaysia’s democracy, its legal system, and governmental policies. The Rights of the Dead also gives an intimate insight into a simple family, which is suddenly thrust into the public sphere and forced to deal with the political realities of the country.
